Turkish Coffee: UNESCO Heritage and Global Influence - Celebrating a Cultural Tradition in a Changing World

The Beloved Tradition of Turkish Coffee

Turkish coffee continues to maintain its position as the most favored coffee in Türkiye, celebrated for its exquisite taste, distinctive brewing method, and profound cultural heritage.

World Turkish Coffee Day: A Culinary and Cultural Celebration

On December 5th, World Turkish Coffee Day commemorates the significance of Turkish coffee, honoring it as both a culinary tradition and a valuable global cultural asset.

UNESCO Recognition for Turkish Coffee

Nuri Çolakoğlu, the leader of the Turkish Coffee Culture and Research Association, underlined the international acclaim of Turkish coffee, stating, "Turkish coffee made history by being the first cultural beverage inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013, significantly raising awareness of our coffee heritage."

Preservation of Cultural Heritage

The joint efforts of the Turkish Coffee Culture and Research Association and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism led to the inclusion of Turkish coffee in UNESCO's heritage list, ensuring the protection and transmission of this cultural practice to future generations.

Turkish Coffee's Cultural Significance

Despite Türkiye not cultivating its coffee beans, unique brewing methods like menengiç, süvari, and dibek coffee have been instrumental in integrating Turkish coffee into the country's cultural identity.

Global Influence and Export of Turkish Coffee

With approximately 3.5 billion cups of coffee consumed daily worldwide, Turkish coffee's international recognition continues to grow, with Turkish brands exporting top-notch machines and processed coffees globally.

Challenges and Rising Costs

Climate-related issues have raised concerns about the supply and cost of coffee globally. In Türkiye, the price of Turkish coffee has more than doubled since September 2023, reflecting these challenges while maintaining a dominant position in the market.

Changing Consumer Trends

Women constitute the primary consumers of Turkish coffee, with an emerging trend towards consuming it "sade," or without sugar, indicating evolving preferences in the coffee culture.
