Turkish Airlines Resumes Flights to Damascus After 10-Year Hiatus

Turkish Airlines to Resume Flights to Damascus

Turkish Airlines has announced that it will resume flights to Syria's capital, Damascus, after a hiatus of over ten years. The decision comes following directives from Syrian authorities.

Restrictions on Passenger Nationalities

According to the CEO of Turkish Airlines, Bilal Ekşi, flights to Damascus will operate three times a week starting from January 23. Passengers from all countries except Israel and Iran are permitted to enter Syria, as per recent directives from the Syrian Arab Republic authorities.

Entry Requirements for Syrian Citizens

Syrian citizens need to provide valid nationality documents for entry into the country. Additionally, Lebanese citizens can enter Syria if they have Syrian parents, residency rights, or visas from another country. Special permission is required for members of the press.

Flight Suspension and Resumption

Turkish Airlines had suspended all flights to Syria in 2011 due to the civil war. However, with the recent developments, including the ousting of Bashar Assad, Turkey has taken steps to normalize relations, becoming the first country to reopen its embassy in Damascus after 12 years.

Support for Syria's Reconstruction

Turkey has advocated for the lifting of international sanctions on Syria to aid in the restoration of basic public services and the reconstruction of the country, which has been severely affected by years of conflict.

International Flights to Damascus

In addition to Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways has also resumed flights to Damascus, signaling a gradual return to normalcy in the region. Commercial flights are seen as a crucial step in rebuilding connections and facilitating travel to and from Syria.
