Launch of Two Istif-class Frigates Marks Milestone in Turkey's MILGEM Project
Two new Istif-class frigates, part of Turkey's MILGEM project, have been successfully launched into the sea, as announced by the head of the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) on Saturday. The vessels, named IZMIR (F-516) and IZMIT (F-517), are the latest additions to the country's naval fleet.
High Local Content Rate Sets These Frigates Apart
These newly launched frigates boast an impressive local content rate of over 80%, showcasing Turkey's commitment to self-sufficiency in defense technology. This achievement follows the delivery of TCG Istanbul (F-515), the first frigate developed under Turkey's National Ship Project.
TCG Istanbul Paves the Way for Success
TCG Istanbul, the inaugural frigate of the Istif class, was officially welcomed into the Naval Forces Command earlier this year. With a focus on high technology and a local content rate exceeding 80%, these frigates symbolize Turkey's naval strength on the global stage.
STM and TAIS Collaboration Drives Progress
The agreement between STM and TAIS has been instrumental in the production of the Istif-class frigates, with TCG Izmir being the latest vessel to emerge from Anadolu Shipyard. The collaborative efforts of these entities highlight Turkey's expertise in naval shipbuilding.
Focus on Innovation and Expertise
TAIS, founded by prominent shipyards in Turkey, specializes in delivering cutting-edge solutions in navy shipbuilding. Meanwhile, STM plays a key role as a leading domestic defense contractor, contributing to technological advancements in the sector.
Enhancing Naval Capabilities with Advanced Frigates
With a substantial displacement of 3,000 tons and advanced specifications, TCG Izmir and TCG Izmit represent the next generation of Turkish frigates. These vessels are poised to bolster the country's maritime independence and defense capabilities significantly.
Future Delivery Plans and Timeline
Both frigates are expected to be handed over to the Navy between 2026 and 2027, following a comprehensive development period. This timeline aligns with Turkey's strategic vision for strengthening its naval presence and operational readiness.
Gratitude Expressed for Key Partners and Supporters
SSB President Görgün extended his appreciation to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for his steadfast support in advancing Turkey's naval capabilities. Recognizing the collaborative efforts of various companies and subcontractors, including TAIS, STM, and other key stakeholders, he emphasized the collective contribution to the success of the MILGEM project.
