The newly launched program features items such as a telescope for stargazing and a car code reader for those interested in automotive diagnostics. Among the fun additions is a bocce set, a game comparable to croquet but adaptable for those using wheelchairs or crutches.
Jennifer McCormack, the library director, highlighted that the idea for the "Library of Things" took shape over the past year. The initiative aims to cater to community requests, including a Blu-ray player and metal detectors for both adults and children. McCormack explained, “If you’ve ever dreamed of becoming a treasure hunter but are hesitant to invest hundreds of dollars in equipment, you can now borrow a metal detector from the library to see if it's your thing.”
The concept, inspired by similar programs in other libraries, allows patrons to browse a selection of items on display cards and then retrieve them from a locked closet at the front desk. This service not only provides access to costly items without the financial commitment but also encourages community engagement by inviting suggestions for new additions.
Located just off the main entrance, the "Library of Things" enables guests to explore various items that might otherwise be expensive to purchase. McCormack noted that in addition to the new bocce set, the library is addressing frequent requests for bicycle repair tools, such as Allen wrenches and bike pumps.
The library has also introduced an array of items including paper shredders and even an animatronic cat, all priced under $150 to ensure affordability and low maintenance. One intriguing possibility is borrowing a ring light for Zoom meetings or social media content, offering a cost-effective way to enhance virtual appearances.
The first item checked out was a label maker, used by a patron to train their dog to press buttons for communication. The library remains open to additional requests, with patrons already suggesting new items like an extra ukulele for both adults and children.
