Kilitbahir Castle to Reopen After Extensive Repairs
Kilitbahir Castle is a historic fortress located in Çanakkale province, Turkey, built in 1462 to prevent aid to the Byzantine Empire. After serving as a museum for the past six years, the castle is set to reopen to visitors following a series of repairs scheduled for the beginning of next year.
Restoration Efforts Underway
Restoration work on Kilitbahir Castle began on October 1 under the supervision of the Gallipoli Historical Peninsula Directorate. The comprehensive restoration includes the removal of plants from the castle walls, repairs to deteriorated structures, and the renovation of wooden elements throughout the castle.
Preserving Historical Integrity
As part of the restoration process, missing parts of wooden stairs inside the main tower will be reconstructed, decayed balusters will be replaced, and wooden bridges surrounding the castle will be repaired. The restoration aims to preserve the original architectural integrity of the 562-year-old castle.
Significance of Kilitbahir Castle
Kilitbahir Castle holds great historical significance as a monument to Fatih Sultan Mehmed and a witness to the Gallipoli Campaign. Ismail Kaşdemir, President of the Gallipoli Historical Peninsula Directorate, emphasized the importance of maintaining historical sites like Kilitbahir Castle to protect their heritage and ensure visitor safety.
Reopening to Visitors
Upon completion of the restoration project, Kilitbahir Castle is expected to reopen to visitors by early 2025. Kaşdemir expressed his hope that the castle will continue to serve as a testament to history, welcoming visitors to experience the spirit of Gallipoli firsthand.
