Auction House Sets New Record with Iconic Ruby Slippers Sale
Ruby slippers worn by actor Judy Garland in "The Wizard of Oz" were auctioned off on Dec. 7 for a staggering $32.5 million, surpassing all expectations. The iconic footwear has now become the most valuable movie memorabilia ever sold at auction, according to Heritage Auctions.
Surpassing Expectations
The final bid for the ruby slippers was $28 million, but with taxes and fees, the total price reached $32.5 million, making it a historic sale. The auction also featured the sale of the Wicked Witch's black hat for $2.9 million, contributing to a total of $38.6 million earned from the entertainment auction.
Storied History of the Famous Shoes
These sequin-covered pumps, one of the four surviving pairs from the 1939 classic, have a remarkable history. Stolen almost two decades ago, the shoes resurfaced in 2018 after a long search involving the FBI. The thief, Terry Martin, confessed to taking the shoes, believing they were adorned with real rubies.
