Excavations and restoration work at Harput Castle in Elazığ have gained momentum with the inclusion of the site in the Culture and Tourism Ministry’s “Legacy for the Future” project. This initiative ensures year-round archaeological excavations at the historic castle.

Significant Historical Findings

Over the years, significant findings dating back to the mid-3000 B.C. have been uncovered at Harput Castle. Discoveries include a 2,800-year-old water cistern from the Urartu period, an open-air temple site, and a palace kitchen believed to be about 1,000 years old, showcasing the rich cultural history of the region.

Remnants of Various Civilizations

Harput Castle reveals remnants of several civilizations, featuring an industrial site from the Middle Ages. The site has yielded furnaces, iron ingots, keys, scissors, spoons, spearheads, and horseshoes among various other artifacts.

Historical and Cultural Significance

Known for its stunning natural setting and panoramic views, Harput Castle offers visitors a unique historical experience. Initial excavations were conducted between 2004 and 2009 and resumed in 2014, continuing uninterrupted since then.

Focus on Industrial Site

The recent focus of excavation work at Harput Castle has been the 1000-year-old industrial site. Conservation efforts and restoration work have been carried out on the workshops, with one workshop already open to the public.

UNESCO World Heritage List Nomination

Efforts are underway to have Harput Castle included in the UNESCO World Heritage List next year. The field studies at the castle are set to be completed by the end of the year, marking the 12th season in 2025.

Preservation and Tourism Development

With over 130,000 historical objects uncovered at Harput Castle, preservation efforts are ongoing. Collaboration with institutions aims to prepare replicas of cultural assets for public display, further enhancing tourism in the region.
