Türkiye's agricultural sector experienced a significant boost in sales last year, registering a 3% increase compared to the previous year. This surge led to the sector achieving its highest annual export figures on record, as revealed in a recent report.

Export Growth and Resilience

According to data compiled by the Anadolu Agency (AA) from the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM), the agricultural sector's exports saw a year-on-year increase of 3.3%, reaching a total of $36.2 billion in 2024. This growth underscores the resilience and competitiveness of Türkiye's agricultural industry in the global market.

Reliability and Strong Demand

Throughout the year, Turkish agricultural products continued to enjoy strong demand, with Türkiye being recognized as a dependable supplier. This reputation is particularly valuable in an era marked by growing concerns over climate change and food safety issues.

Strategic Positioning and Market Share

Notably, the agricultural sector accounted for 16% of Türkiye's total exports, positioning it as a key contributor to the country's economy. The sector's performance closely followed the automotive industry, which led the overall export figures with $37.2 billion in foreign sales.

Sectoral Achievements and Growth Prospects

Two subsectors within agriculture achieved their highest-ever annual export levels last year. Fruit and vegetable products recorded exports worth $2.7 billion, while dried fruit and related products reached export values exceeding $1.85 billion.

International Trade Highlights

Germany and the United States emerged as prominent destinations for Türkiye's agricultural exports, with significant trade volumes recorded in both the dried fruit and vegetable and fruit and vegetable products categories.

Regional Leadership in Exports

On a regional basis, Istanbul led the export figures for fruit and vegetable products, totaling $637 million, while Izmir excelled in the dried fruit and vegetable sector, with exports amounting to $481.6 million.

Melisa Tokgöz Mutlu, Chairperson of the Istanbul Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters' Association, emphasized the importance of sustainability and innovation in the agricultural sector. She highlighted Türkiye's commitment to becoming a reliable and sustainable supplier through advanced technologies and tailored product offerings.

Future Growth and Environmental Responsibility

Mutlu outlined ambitious targets for agricultural exports, aiming to reach $40 billion in the coming years. To achieve this goal, she stressed the significance of sustainable practices, climate-friendly policies, and the adoption of environmentally conscious production methods across the sector.
