Istanbul Airport Revolutionizes European Aviation with Triple Runway Operations

Istanbul Airport is set to pioneer simultaneous takeoff and landing on three runways, a first in Europe. The innovative system, starting in April, aims to boost efficiency and passenger capacity. With plans to serve 85 million passengers by 2024 and expand to 120 million by 2025, the airport is on a trajectory of strategic growth.

Istanbul Airport to Launch Simultaneous Takeoff and Landing Operations on Three Runways

Istanbul Airport is gearing up to introduce a groundbreaking feature in European aviation by enabling simultaneous takeoff and landing operations on three runways starting in April next year. Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the system, allowing three aircraft to independently land and take off at the same time, will be operational from April 17. This innovative approach aims to enhance the airport's efficiency and passenger capacity.

European Aviation Hub Leading the Way

With this new system, Istanbul Airport will become the first aviation hub in Europe to implement simultaneous independent triple runway operations. Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that this development signifies a significant milestone in the airport's continuous efforts to accommodate the growing number of passengers efficiently. The cutting-edge technology aims to reduce delays, optimize fuel usage, and streamline flight operations.

Strategic Growth and Expansion

Opened officially in late October 2018 and fully operational by April 2019, Istanbul Airport has rapidly emerged as a crucial transit point along the Black Sea coast. Handling around 76 million passengers in the previous year, a notable increase from 2019, the airport is on track to serve 85 million passengers by the end of 2024. Furthermore, plans are underway to boost the passenger capacity to 120 million by 2025 as part of the airport's strategic expansion vision.

Future Development Phases and Runway Expansion

The airport's current phase allows for the handling of 90 million passengers annually, with ongoing construction works for new runways that will optimize taxiing times and overall air traffic operations upon completion. The ambitious expansion project, consisting of four phases and including six runways, is projected to conclude by 2028. The inauguration of the airport's third runway in June 2020 marked a significant step towards achieving operational excellence.

Efficiency and Sustainability Goals

Minister Uraloğlu highlighted that the "simultaneous independent triple runway operation" will not only minimize operational delays but also contribute to substantial fuel savings and heightened flight efficiency. These enhancements align with the airport's commitment to sustainable growth and innovation in the aviation sector. The continuous improvements aim to establish Istanbul Airport as a global leader in airport operations and passenger experience.
